singing lessons london - Jennifer May

FAQS

Can anyone sing?
We are born with all the tools we need to make all kinds of sounds; to speak, to whine, to shout, to scream and to sing. We can all improve our use of the tools. Of course singing is not just a matter of learned technique. It's the message, the magic, the emotion, the metaphysics which truly brings singing to life.

Why have singing lessons?
We all learn in different ways; from the radio, our friends, our teachers. Having lessons with a good coach can bypass years of trial and error based learning at home and motivate you towards attaining your goals. It can also be a fun/therapeutic way to spend an hour experimenting with your singing voice in a safe environment.

How often should I have lessons?
Weekly or fortnightly lessons is generally what I suggest though of course this depends on what you are looking to achieve. When learning anything new regular lessons are key to ensure that new techniques are being learned and implemented correctly and to maintain your momentum.

How quickly will I improve?
Often improvements are instant in the lessons but the techniques then need to be practiced and practiced well (in lessons/at home) to become habitual.

I am concerned that if I have singing lessons I may lose my individual sound.
My aim is to enable you to find and develop your own unique and interesting voice. The vocal technique work I teach is purely to overcome any barriers to your freedom of expression.

I am having health issues with my voice can you help?
If you are concerned about health issues with your voice you need to see your GP, who will be able to refer you appropriately.  I can give you guidance in lessons as to ways to use your voice more healthily but I'm not a health professional.  If it's agreed after you've had a professional look at your vocal folds that they are healthy we can start lessons, possibly in conjunction with an SLT/physiotherapist /oesteopath as appropriate.

I am a bit confused about the different teaching methods, who is the right teacher for me?
There are many varied and valid ways to teach/learn singing. Singing teachers are a diverse bunch. Terminology and methodology differs between teachers and sometimes the same terminology will even be used to mean different things! The terminology you use doesn't really matter, what matters is that what you are learning is appropriate for your style of singing. You probably don't want to sound like a classical singer singing rock for or a jazz singer singing pop! Ask your teacher to demonstrate what they are teaching you (in a line from a song, not an exercise) so that you can MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND as to whether it suits you. There is no one fixed method.

Seeking artists/session singers?
Please feel free to submit any material to my e-mail and I will be selective in it's distribution amongst my clients/colleagues.

Signed artist info.
Signed artists and all clients are assured absolute confidentiality. I do not publish client lists. The lessons are for you not me. If you are management/record company funded I would like to have dialogue with artist and management/record company. Please note that all clients must follow the same payment policies.
